Summer Heat is Here!

Watch the Water!

Cities and water suppliers everywhere are reminding thier water users to conserve water during this high demand time of year. Some simple thing you can do are:

Check your irrigation system: Repair broken heads or pipes, adjust heads as needed, check your controller settings and watch for excess runoff.

Know your watering day: Know what your city requirements are and follow the rules. Water only on your designated day(s).

Watch the weather: Check the forecast before watering, avoid watering after (or during!) rainfall. Make sure your weather sensor is funtioning correctly or install on if needed.

Get an irrigation system check-up: Many cities offer this as a free service or have a licensed irrigator look at your system and make recommendations.

Check for rebates: LCRA and many cities offer rebates for upgrading your sprinkler system, adding mulch and compost and other water saving measures.

Heat Stress Help!

Distributors and reatils are featuring products that will help with summer heat plant stress. Customers are asking for better water retention, heathier soils, stronger root systems, improved heat tolerance, and better water retention.

Some products to look for are:

Green Sand-Help imporve soil texture and adds minerals.

Expanded Shale– Improves soil texture, helps hold water.

Liquid Molasses– Feeds soil microorganisms, organic.

Organic Fertilizer– Slow release, feeds plants and the soil, low risk of fertilizer burn.

Liquid Seaweed– Helps with heat stress (see below).

Monterey Complete Disease Control- Fights fungal issues-both foliar and soil- borne. It contains the beneficial bacteria Bacillus amyloliquefaciens works as a highly beneficial, spore-forming soil bacterium. It thrives by forming a protective shell and producing active enzymes, lipopeptides, and root-signaling compounds that boost plant health, fight off pathogens, and break down organic matter.

Tip Of The Day:

Apply liquid seaweed to help reduce heat stress. Liquid seaweed reduces heat stress by delivering natural biostimulants that promote cellular hydration and antioxidant defense. Compounds like betaines and cytokinins allow plants to retain moisture, regulate their pores, and neutralize damaging free radicals generated during extreme temperatures.

Featured Plant:

Texas sage (Leucophyllum frutescens) is a hardy, drought-tolerant evergreen shrub native to the Southwest. Famous for its silvery foliage and vibrant purple or pink flowers, it gets the nickname “Barometer Bush” because it bursts into dramatic blooms just before or after rainfall and high humidity.
